Summer 2004 breaks record for rainfall

Star-Telegram

Saturday's storm dropped 2.26 inches of rain on Dallas/Fort Worth Airport, making this summer the wettest on record, according to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.

The June-July-August total through Saturday afternoon was 18.89 inches, breaking a record set in 1928, meteorologist Dan Shoemaker said. And the records may keep coming. The national Climate Prediction Center is expecting a damp fall and spring as an El NiƱo forms in the Pacific Ocean, Shoemaker said.

This summer's record was aided by more than 10 inches of rain in June -- a near record for the month. In late July, storms dropped 3.95 inches at D/FW Airport but drenched Mansfield with up to 13 inches. Last weekend's storms added more than 4 inches in Fort Worth.
